The Pros and
Cons of Business Brokers
What some franchise brokers will do to prospective
entrepreneurs, and why
Some Franchise Brokers are the greatest asset available
to individuals seeking a new life as the owner of a fast-growing
company. These business brokers are patient, letting their clients
discover the right "fit" for their temperament and background.
In some cases, however, people find that their business broker used
unethical means to manipulate one of the biggest decisions of their
lives.... for a commission.
Don* was 20 years with a national aerospace company, and
suddenly found himself reorganized right out of a position. Some heart
to heart talks with his spouse and children firmed up his decision to
open his own business. So Don found a business broker that promised to
help Don find the right business for himself. Three months later, Don
found Sign Biz, Inc. on his own while browsing the web. He was
very excited-- this was the perfect business for his skills and his
desire to stay away from long retail hours in a consumer driven
business.
There was just one problem: the business broker would not
receive a commission if Don opened a Sign Biz business. Don
explained to the franchise chain broker that he was very close to
finalizing a decision to join the Sign Biz Network, and felt this was
the right choice for many reasons. The broker was not ready to accept
Don's decision, after all, he stood to lose as much as $12,000 in
commissions.
The broker decided to mount a campaign against the Sign
Biz Corporation, claiming that the company
was struggling. This tactic was designed to instill doubt and fear, but
later backfired.
Over a twel;ve year period, the current president, Teresa M
Young had not only built the world's largest chain of non-franchised
sign companies, but had moved the company into a position of financial strength
and profitability. This earned her a nomination for the Entrepreneur of
the Year Awards, sponsored by NASDAQ, and USA Today.

Don fell victim to the broker's agenda to dissuade him
from choosing the business development services of Sign Biz Inc. He put
a deposit down on a sign franchise, and then spent three nights, as he
explained, "With a knot in my stomach and anxiety
attacks." So at the urging of his spouse, Don went back to
his due diligence, and there he found it: A complete D&B report on
the company's strong financial postion. Suddenly, he says, "I had the
complete picture." Don knew that the business had been
misrepresented by the franchise network broker, and he was
furious.
"My family and I had counted on this man to do the
right thing, but he let greed get in the way. This is our future,
and he played with it." Ultimately, the story has a happy ending.
Don finally got his money back from the franchise, though it took more
than two months, and he opened a beautiful and thriving sign business in
the Sign Biz Network. His experience leads him to tell other would-be
entrepreneurs to "be very careful and dig deep about anything that
a broker might tell you. Just because they seem really supportive and
friendly doesn't mean they are your friend."
