Las Vegas, NV (April, 2007)
Kozell "Kozy" Boren was honored with the Kirk L. Brimley Distinguished Service Award, ISA's most prestigious award, at the Keynote Luncheon hosted during the world's largest sign industry tradeshow, the ISA Expo, in Las Vegas. Kirk L. Brimley, the award's namesake himself, was present to witness the honor. ISA gives the award annually to an ISA member who demonstrated outstanding dedication and service to the association and the sign industry, and has made significant and substantial contributions to the sign industry over an extended period of time.
ISA Chairwoman Teresa Young presented the award, citing Boren’s advocacy for the sign industry, including donations for research and projects. Young and Boren have been friends for many years, after learning of a mutual passion for small business, and coincidentally, sharing the same birthday and month (different years).
"Kozy has been a tireless advocate for the sign industry. His companies have contributed, on average, $100,000 per year for the last 10 years to research and fund projects expanding the science of signage and promoting the importance of signage. For fifty years, the worlds in and out of the Sign Industry have experienced again and again an exciting "Slice of Life" as a result of their association with this extraordinary man."
Kozy's son, Tom Boren, accepted the award on his father's behalf. "The best way I can describe my dad is to say that he is an innovator, not an imitator," he said. "He always looks at ways to change things for the better."
A Texas native, Kozell Boren got his start in the signage business as a salesman operating in California. Eventually, he would go on to form his own company, named Superior Outdoor Display, with the help of Conrad Escalante. Superior Outdoor Display then bought Gulf Development, another up-and-coming company in the sign business. The company remained Gulf Development from 1964 until the 2000 name change to Signtronix.
At the age of 27, Boren and partner Conrad Escalante founded Superior Outdoor Display on Long Beach, Calif. They began by building arrows that attached to existing signs with their motto, "You add customers to your business when you add color and action to your sign.Signtronix primarily works with small business owners who are seeking to draw in more customers with attractive signage. The company built a name for quality as Gulf Development. In the 1970s, the company was successful with its Dyna-Lite signs before creating a library of graphic icons for use on signage. It was discovered that these sign graphics were powerful advertising tools.
