Dana Point, CA (April 20, 2009)
Once upon a time Sign Biz International held their annual Convention every year just like hundreds of other companies across the country...quietly, earnestly, assiduously following the outline laid down in time by companies before them. It didn’t take very long, however, before it became apparent that there was, in fact, nothing conventional about their gatherings...so much leadership, so much thrust to excel, so much collective effort, way too much creativity and way, way too much bonhomie! As a result of all this excess by mutual agreement with all who attended, they were forced to rename their yearly coming together “The Reunion”, and thus it has been called ever since...
The Theme --This year, in the midst of international outcry over the economy, Sign Biz President and CEO, Teresa M. Young, embraced an idea submitted by Sign Biz Advisory Board Member, Peter Wolf - “Survivor 2009” - as this year's Reunion theme.
In her opening remarks, Young explained some of the features of the Survivor symbol. “The African Drum pictured here is named ‘Djembe’; meaning 'to gather together', which is fitting for our Survivor Program. Totem poles, like the one pictured on the left, serve as the emblem of a family or clan, and often as a reminder of its ancestry; they are carved and raised to represent its dignity, its accomplishments, its prestige, its adventures, its stories, its rights and prerogatives. And so it is a symbol of our network family."
Young reminded her business owners, “Totem Poles are carved, not by one carver, but by a chief carver and a number of apprentices. This symbol represents the many individuals who have carved out this program for all of us today. From our Sponsors, to our Advisory Board, to our guest contributors and staff, this Sign Biz Reunion is the result of our collective effort.”
Pointing out the dragonfly at the top of the survivor symbol, the Sign Biz leader said, ”She is a symbol of longevity. We are here to prepare our minds and our businesses to thrive in 2009 and for many years beyond. Survivor attendees know that longevity requires preparation and investment in time and energy. "
Three big general sessions and 20 roundtable topics (in keeping with their 20 year Anniversary!) made Survivor 2009 the biggest Reunion ever! In a fast paced, high energy program Sign Biz members gathered the best information available and took it home with them on Reunion CDs preloaded with more than 300 megabytes of information from every contributor. The addition of a keynote luncheon, awards ceremony, the famous Sign Biz party and their exclusive 3-hour tour of Flexi for Graphic Designers made it a program worthy of survivors!
