Signs
of the Times magazine, a leading trade publication
for the sign industry, points to SIGN BIZ, Inc. and
licensees as providing the highest return on investment
(ratio between annual sales and start-up costs)
of all franchises and chains today.
PART ONE: MARKET OVERVIEW
I. According to Signs of The Times magazine ( a
leading source of information for the sign industry
since 1906), their research reveals that in June of
1991, there were a total of 22 franchisers in the
United States, and 4 business licensors, including Sign Biz, Inc., with a total of more than
800 affiliates between them (an average of 33.33
stores/each). These numbers declined briefly as some
franchisers and licensors were eliminated by their
competition.
II. In 1992, estimates of the size of the CAS
industry were derived by using a combination of sign
franchisers' Uniform Offering Circulars (UFOCs) and
independent surveys of both franchised/licensed and
independent businesses. Independent CAS businesses
numbered 450, and franchised/licensed shops numbered
750.
III. The recently ratified Digital Sign & Graphics Franchisor/Licensor
division of the International Sign Association (the
largest non-profit sign organization in the world,
established in 1944), in 2002 determined that only
eight (8) franchisers and two (2) licensors remain
operating domestically, representing a total of
approximately 1000 franchisees/licensees.

V. While 66% of the franchisors and 50% of the
licensors ceased operations during the five-year
period from June 1991 to June 1996, the number of
affiliated locations per remaining
licensor/franchisor nearly tripled, reflecting an
average rate of growth of 134% per year.

V. The growth rate for these domestic
organizations has not slowed; in fact the absolute
number of new CAS businesses continues to grow each
year, as well as ventures established in the
international marketplace.
VI. By February, 1993, Sign Biz had Network Members
in 3 foreign countries. As of today, Sign Biz has
established Sign Biz computer-aided sign businesses
in Bahamas, Canada, Mexico, Newfoundland,
Philippines, and the first CAS business ever in
Mongolia.
VII. Over 20 million businesses require signs in the
US, and each year over one million businesses are
added to this number. This has made the sign industry
one of the fastest growing service industries of the decade.
VIII. The total number of sign businesses in the
US, including traditional and electrical, is
estimated to be between 20,000 and 30,000. Of these,
an estimated 10,000 businesses could be classified as
predominantly CAS businesses.
IX.
The projected level of saturation domestically for
computer-aided sign businesses is considered to be in the range
of 20,000 - 22,000 businesses. By all estimates, the number of
CAS businesses in the US can at least double before a competitive market is reached.
